Looking for Comm Port Testing App

I wonder if anyone can help?

I'm looking for an app than can test comm ports
I need [must] run it from a pen drive or similar as I can't install anything on the machines.
These machines all run XP Pro & use the comm ports to receive data - they occasionally blow the comm ports but at the moment we don't have an easy on-site solution for testing them.

I recall something from a few years back called Checkit that ran in a DOS shell & used a loopback plug to make some basic checks which was ideal but it looks as though it has now morphed into a full blown suite.

TIA

I was going to tell you about checkit it was a really usefull peice of software even without the loopback plugs for testing everything else.

I would see if you can buy the older version and make a bootdisk with it on, or a bootable memory stick or cd.

Thanks Little John - that was along the line of thought I had, it would have to be a bootable USB stick as the machines do not have any drives other than a SATA HDD
I was however hoping to run something without powering down as they are used as EPoS tills & they don't like them switched off but if I have to, I will.

    cheers all

The way I always tell it to customers is it isnt working, I can fix it but I will need to reset things and turn stuff off. I will be a=s quick as I can to solve the problem and won't turn anything off without giving you warning.

They normally just say ok no problem to that.

Switching off is easier said than done
Typically each site has 3 or 4 machines, if one has to come down the others have to be configured to work without it or the security measures kick in & disable all of them  which is not somewhere I want to go without absolutley needing to.
The repaired machine cannot then be brought back on line until after trading [usually remotely]
Like I said, if I have to - I will, but I'd rather not
