I'm somewhat depressed that a student feels they have to educate themselves here (at taxpayer's expense) to then go and work abroad.

Admittedly as your OH is studying here presumably at his home country's expense then whichever place you establish your home in will be experiencing a brain drain.

Is Britain that bad a place to start a career and a family? :(

Cheers for the EVER so helpful reply.:mad:
  • Hi, not a vet but worked for one for many years before a career change.
Tv21 makes a good point though. Even if you did qualify, you might struggle to get to use your qualification abroad.
Have you checked the regulations for the country you want to move to?

After further checking, it would seem that actually I don't have the qualifications needed for the degree course. Sigh.

Going to look and see if there are any other options...

Does anyone know of any other funding options for those ineligible for student maintenance loans?

As a mature student, you dont necessarily need formal qualifications to get on a course. Sometimes experience within the field, is viewed just as favourably.

Contact senior lecturer and big up your skills and experience, see what they say

I din't mean it to sound unhelpful. Your OH obviously knows his qualification will be accepted in his own country (and will definitely be accepted here). You're trying to study for a qualification that may not transfer - have you checked?

As dizzyrascal points out t's surprisingly difficult to cross borders with a level 3 qualification and get it fully accredited unless you know more about it.

As for funding I presume you're checked out this page from the Next Step website

Flea72 has made just the point that I was going to, I think as long as you have the minimum entry qualifications for the university then there is always the possibility of entry as a mature student without the normal course qualifications.

Many apologies for putting my foot in it, I very much hope everything works out for you with your family life. :o

You *may* not need the entry qualifications for the foundation degree, mature students can be accepted without because these are supposed to be less academic and more practical than a regular honours degree. A decent admissions tutor is well aware they tend to have vocational knowledge and are very hard working.

Bit of a long shot but would your workplace agree to you becoming a day release/ part time student if it did not cost them anything/ much? Could you afford to pay the fees if the college allowed instalments? Could you work part time at your place for money and volunteer at a Teaching Practice part time? On all the diploma entries it says
    "Students must ...
    3. be employed at either a TP or aTP (if studying by day release)

You also might be able to claim certain means tested benefits, if you were a full time student you'd get a discount on council tax and public transport. This includes foundation degrees even tho attendance is only part time. If you ended up on a very low income you might get housing benefit or council tax benefit although I don't think you'd get any living expenses like JSA or income support.

The final option is working out just how little you can live on, can you cope in a studio flat, with pushbike instead of car, eating a la Weezl74's challenges or this book? If you live in a modern decently insulated flat doing without heating most of the year is far easier than you think because you benefit from the neighbours: electric underblanket on bed, electric overblanket on sofa.

  • Just to clear some things up.
To qualify as a VN you need to be sponsored by a registered training practice. Or you can quantify via the degree route.
It's really hard to get a place at a TP as there is such a lot of competition and the places are limited
