Huge Bank Charges

Hello MSE members,

Brilliant forum you have here, and hopefully one of you may be able to shed a bit of light on my predicament.

For the last 4 years I have had a debt with HALIFAX that to be honest I've almost found impossible to pay off, in fact the actual facts of the matter are I paid this debt (5k) off last week and it's taken me 6 years in total.

Now in that time (I've only hunted back 3.5 years) I have a mass of mixed charges all from Halifax, some planned overdraft charges, some unplanned, some deposit of interest, and some as account charges. In fact there are so many that just going through my statements quickly before coming on this forum I totalled up £2,724 of HALIFAX charges between now and July 2009 - and I have had this account a lot longer.

So my question is, can these be reclaimed back at all? Is there anything I can do, and to be honest yes I know the debt is my own debt and proudly I have paid this off now but to be honest wow has it been a struggle, in recent months I was getting charged £90 a month just in interest.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone with the same experience or knowledge on the subject, thank you very much in advance and I hope everyone has a brilliant weekend!

Mark

Generally the answer is no. Banks will consider refunds for people in current financial hardship. However, it doesnt sound like you were (people in arrears, defaults, unable to meet bills etc)
in recent months I was getting charged £90 a month just in interest.

    interest is not a charge.

Its good that you have got out of it but that may also be the downfall with any request for refund. You have repaid the debt and not in hardship. You are not going to want to hear this but the time to ask them was a couple of years ago when the debt was there and you were struggling.
