I've got a car with smelly air conditioning, I had a look for some spray to clean the system in Halfords but it was nearly £12. Has anyone got a cheaper way to clean the air con system and get rid of the smell?

I don't know a lot about aircon but I had a similar problem with a vehicle a while back and what I did was to put the air con onto circulate ie ensure that you are switched to reuse the air inside the vehicle rather than drawing fresh from outside, and to spray the interior with Nuetradol this worked first time for me and would indicate I had no long standing problem but worth a try.

It's also a good idea to run the air conditioning for about 15mins every couple of weeks or so, even in the winter. This prevents a lot of potential problems, including unwanted smells.

The smell can often be because your pollen filter is blocked. Have you had it cleaned/replaced recently?

I think this was the issue with my vehicle it had just not been used lately and probably some bacterial odour which just needed to be flushed

run the aircon, full fan with the heater set to its hottest. Will get rid of the whiff. move the 'direction' of the output a few times too to make sure all the vents get warmed up. The back to cold and the smell should be gone. Used to work in the motor trade and this worked every time for free (well about 50p of fuel!)

Aren't you supposed to run the air-con even in the winter regularly to keep it running well?

Yes, as the seals dry out and the whole system packs in if you don't use it often enough.
