Life is too short and as you've realised, your focus changes with time. Go with your gut feeling. If the job has become a bone of contention and you have savings and pension to tide you over for an extended period then consider the move, however take time and don't rush and very imporattly - consider the wishes of others affected in making your decision.

It's lovely to read such positive and encouraging comments - many thanks.

Not going to rush things as this does need planning, however what I AM going to do is prepare my employer for my resignation (lovely people just one restructure too many for this old dog[ess]) and will probably leave work before I move north.

I think I had made my decision in my heart - now my head has joined in. There's only my elderly mother left from that generation and I do need to have some time with her before it's too late. I recently got my Dad's army service record and there are so many blanks and unanswered questions that I now know that he and I should have spoken about his service time a lot more before he died.

By my side is a little glass of Jura Superstition which I will now raise and toast you all here!

Oooh - feels exciting. New chapter and all that.

    Many thanks again.

You saying you were raising a glass to us all was heartwarming.

Heres to you with just an ordinary glass (large) of red wine, cheers.

My ex boss lives on Jura, and has something to do with the distillery.
    How's that for a coincidence.

    Good luck to you.

Decision made, take your time to put the plans together, it does not have to be done tomorrow. Your remaining time at work is going to be easier, I am sure.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

hi gers, i wish you all the best and hope you get quite a few good and healthy years with your mum.. i was up too early today(03:15), at least 2 hrs too early, and when it is nice and quiet and peaceful in my house, and to keep me awake, i always read in the forum.. so many interesting topics, quite a few relate to me so it is helpful also..I started reading your thread, at first, i was unsure as to what you should do, but was at least 85% for you to do it.. i read very helpful comments, but what really made up my mind to 100% in agreement with what you are planning, was your quote ...Happily I have now broached the subject with my elderly mother and she was stunned and shocked but delighted too.. that was it, and it hit home with thoughts of losing my dad almost 2 years ago...go for it really wish you well.

Just a quick reply today - thanks again for the lovely comments, a little tear came to my eyes!

Superstition went down well and it's red wine tonight.

Planning underway already though I spent a lot of last night wide awake in bed thinking things through. I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted from these weary old shoulders and the sun is shining out of my spirit again. :j

Happiness is a big decision made.

    Cheers folks

I would not be telling my employer until much closer to the time.

They may preempt your timescales stay in control.

It might also be worth trying to find out whether your employer is likely to be running any voluntary (or compulsory) exit schemes in the near future ... if you get an extra lump sum within a timescale which fits with your possible plans, then so much the better.

Already discussed this on an informal/off the record basis. As I said the people are lovely just one restructure too many for me.

No, the role is not going to be made redundant, I already asked HR that question. And my pension is not from my current employer but a deferred LGS pension which is now driving in like the cavalry to save my bacon. The moral is for all the young folk out there is to pay into a pension plan as early as you can and keep paying in... the freedom it brings a long time in the future is priceless.

Right - I am now back in my own place. My shoulders feel so much lighter, even though this move won't happen within the next six months the plans are being put in place and I am free to resign whenever I feel like it.

Lovely thread, lovely comments and some really good advice.

Well done for making a difficult decision :-) If you hadn't got there by the time I'd read this thread, I'd be asking something along the lines of, what would you advise a friend to do if they were in the same situation?
