Think we were misled about card.

We were called in for a review of our account at Santander last week, the lady advised us to change to their 123 account to receive cash back on direct debits. She also told us to use the black card (that would be sent through the post) for purchasing groceries, petrol and any store purchases. We asked if this black card was a credit card and was told NO it was part of the new 123 account. This black card arrived this week and lo and behold the opening sentence is "Welcome to your new SANTANDER 123 CREDIT CARD. It will definately NOT BE USED, and i'm quite annoyed about being lied to. We explained that we are trying to keep our outgoings to a minimum and that we already had a credit card with Tesco. Should I go back to the branch and complain or just shred cards up?:(

Don't just cut up card as after 12 months you will be charged per month for having it.

Shredding them won't close the CC account - you'll need to contact them

In terms of a complaint, yes you could but really what outcome is likely? An apology at best?
  • I hav'nt activated the cards yet so do I still need to cancel them? I know what you mean about achieving any outcome, and I really don't want to get anyone into trouble, but they should make things clearer.

You were called in? Seems to me you're a bit too submissive to deal with banks.

So where is the debit card that comes with the 123 Current Account? Are you sure it's actually a credit card? Did you sign an agreement for a credit card? If you signed a credit agreement you must have a copy of it.

All these are questions that need to be answered: Go into the branch, stick your foot down and demand what you want. If you don't get it demand to speak to the manager!

"Go into the branch, stick your foot down and demand what you want." - 'demand'? Demand what?

From what we know they didn't want a CC and have been given one. They need to contact the bank to close the CC, and, if they wish, feedback that it was mis-leading.

From what you've written it sounds like you want them to go in all guns blazing - not sure what you think that will achieve.

When bank staff advise you to do something remember they are selling to you. Their "advice" is no more than a sales spiel.

Don't they also want the debit card then?

Why is demanding something going in with all guns blazing? It's being firm and not taking "No" for an answer. The alternative is of course asking, pleading, begging, etc. But that's not advisable especially with banks.

Demand whatever it is that they want.
For example, they may want the bank to cancel the credit card. They may want the bank to explain why it was that they ended up with a credit card when they were told that they wouldn't be getting one. They may want a gesture of goodwill to cover the costs and time of going back to the branch for what appears to be a mistake on the bank's part. They may want to hear what steps will be taken to ensure this doesn't happen to other customers in the future.

Personally I would suggest that you start off by being nice. Tell the bank what it is you want. Don't plead or beg, but also don't demand straight off.
If they then don't give you what you want you might then want to go down the "demand" route.

If you're not happy then take it to the Ombudsman. But there's very little personal gain to be had from this.

I think you will find going to any organisation and demanding won't get you very far or give you the desired effect. They will just look at you and think i'm not going to help this idoit!!!!

Its best to be polite and courteous explain what has happened and then see what they can do for you. If your behave in a polite manner they are more willing to help you in fact from experience they will go out of there way to help you!!!

A simple word like THANK YOU often goes further than being demanding and abrupt!!!
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.
