Laptop switching off

I have a friend who has asked me about the following problem she is having.

Her laptop works no problem with the power lead connected to the mains and laptop with battery still in place but when he removes the mains cable the laptop will only last around 30 mins approx.

She has replaced the power lead about 1 yet ago so I advised her to take out the battery use the laptop with the mains cable and the laptop now dies after 10 mins. She has to physically start the laptop again.

I originally thought the battery was poor as she said he nearly always uses the laptop connected to the mains which is not good for the batteries memory state.

Would the laptop be overheating? Any ideas?

That sounds like a battery that is past it's best. A new battery would be required if use away from a mains connection is required.

That doesn't make much sense. How does it die and does it repeatedly do it?
