What device are you having problems with?
On a typical desktop computer the internal speaker is connected as a simple buzzer, not to the main sound system.0 -

First, test the speakers with something else to rule out the possibility that the monitor is somehow to blame. Then, take a look at these:0

Hmm. Many years ago I had an old cassette radio player. And I'd quite often use the headphones. When I plugged the headphones in, it would mute the main speakers, because of something (presumably a little switch) in the headphone socket that "knew" when something was in the socket.
But it got a lot of use and after a while, sometimes the speakers would cut out for no reason. It turned out to be because the little switch in the headphone socket was faulty.
Could this be the problem with your computer? I think the headphones in a computer work in a similar way to my old radio cassette, and also "know" when headphones are plugged in. So maybe there's a fault in the socket; it still thinks the headphones are plugged in when they really aren't?0
