There are ongoing threads on Grabbit for Home Bargains, Poundland and B & M - with current good buys to look out for.
I love Home Bargains and always buy their Nicky (3 ply) toilet rolls. Their current specials at the beginning of the first aisle are always worth a look too. My store cupboard is packed with Bella Ricetta cherry tomatoes - 3 tins for £1. And I always buy my lentils, dried fruit, cereal bars etc from there. In 99p Stores we get 6 kitchen rolls for 99p !! My local Poundland always seems to be missing the really good deals on the website0

Using my husband's rescue Dell laptop. The pound sign gets a hash, the hash doesn't give a pound, there's no pound to be found, the at gets speech marks and the speech marks deliver an at. OH got it as a freebie from the office because it has these keyboard issues.
He managed to get into my Vaio, today umm second Vaio I've fried:o Yup well and truly broken <ahem> and I managed to do it just 24 days after the warranty expired

Most of those products are unnecessary and some are actively unhealthy, you'd save more money by not buying them. Sugary/ fatty/ junky foods are supposed to comprise no more than 10% of daily calories.

I'm not one of those posters who seems to delight in shouting others down but it does bother me that so many offers are on 'junk' food. It's not that I don't buy them myself sometimes (everyone likes a treat:))but I believe the shops are working against people trying to eat healthily.
So IMO the 'best' bargains are to be had at places like Aldi and Lidl. Aldi's Super Six on fruit and veg (and their f&v prices generally) and Lidl where they regularly have meat on offer at weekends. Other bargain items would be things like cleaning materials and shampoo etc regularly on offer at pound shops and the like.
So, briefly, I search out any bargains on healthy food that I can but they're much harder to find than 'junk' food.0 -
On the face of it, it does seem like quality food is more expensive. IF you are eating that and NOT eating the piles of junk food, then most people won't think about factoring that in.
For example, I used to consume diet Pepsi rather than fruit juices, squashes and full sugar versions. Not drinking it saves me minimum $200 a year.
If you add up the crisps, cakes, chocolates, biscuits etc it can be really surprising.
When manufacturers and supermarkets talk about 'added value' they don't mean for us, they mean for themselves.
If they sell you a steak, they aren't making as much profit as if they put that in a cook it yourself ready meal package with a sauce and some veg. If you look at the price per kg, you'll often find that these things are MORE expensive per kg than making it yourself would be.
Stick all the fish offcuts together in finger shapes, cover em in 'breadcrumbs' (ever seen orange breadcrumbs ?) and sell it for more per kg than cod.
If Chevalgate teaches us anything, I hope it will be that more people will think if I cut out the carp because who knows what's in it that saves X so that increases my budget for real food by X.0 -
I would love to save a fortune. It has to be on healthy stuff though and not on empty calories. Could someone show me the way?
It has been pointed out to me (since joining) my shopping list is far from ideal and to cut my budget I need to cut the empty calories this is where my savings usually lie.
What healthy stuff do you regularly buy from these places that save you a fortune. This is how I can reduce my budget further.

You won't find much in the way of healthy food in shops like Home Bargains, Poundland, 99p Stores etc because it's mostly all processed food. Very little fresh or frozen or plain tinned stuff like wild fish.
You may find fresh/UHT milk, eggs, tinned veg, wholemeal bread, tinned wild fish.
Instant noodles, pizzas, pasties, pies, soups made in a mug, cakes, fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolates, crisps.. that's not real food.0
