The current financial climate leaves a lot to desired when trailing the supermarkets for the produce on “special offer”. Enticing the average customer to buy more food than they actually need and in many cases only saving themselves a few pence on purchasing a second item. The flashy signs and bight colours used in many leading supermarkets can easily distract you to the fact that the “special offer” is not really that fantastic and that the amount you will need to purchase is sometimes unnecessary. I myself have fallen victim to the glamour of unnecessary purchases due to the many “special offers” or “3 for 2” items. This is why it’s nice to see that not all stores are upping their prices, only to disguise the fact that the product was too expensive in the first place. I challenge any leading store to “price match” my current shopping loot!:)

4x Multi V, 500ml Vitamin water- 76p (19p each!)
4x Revive, 500ml Vitamin water-76p (19p each!)
1xPomegranate pure plus, 1-liter pomegranate juice drink- 0.79
3x Sweet and sour- Mug shot -99p (33p each!)
2x Chinese style-Mug shot-66p (33p each!)
1xMaxwell house latte sachets 8 pk-0.99p
1xKellogs all bran youghurty flakes-£1.89
4x Vimto no added sugar 330ml cans-£1.00(25p each!)
1x Ferrero Rocher 16 pieces-£1.99
2x Parsons pickled cockles-£2.78 (1.39 each!)
1x18 T/Rolls comfy soft-£3.49
1x Sure clear aqua anti-perspirant 150ml-£1.00

Total loot=£17.10

Where did I get these fantastic branded items from you ask? Well the name really speaks for itself……… a big thank you to Home Bargains (Trafford) and to the very friendly shopping assistant Ruth for helping the average Josephine through this economical crisis!

If you too are struggling with the pay freeze and price rises of absolutely everything, then I would highly recommend a trip to your local Home bargains store. Which not only has ridiculously low prices but has supported several charities along the way too! Happy bargain shopping

Welcome :) Most of those products are unnecessary and some are actively unhealthy, you'd save more money by not buying them. Sugary/ fatty/ junky foods are supposed to comprise no more than 10% of daily calories.

  • Do you work for Home Bargains? I agree with Fire Fox - you could save £17.10 by not bothering with that rubbish. :)

  • Well I thought they where a good price and they've saved me a fortune so I'm happy :-) I know you can't buy all your regular healthy shopping from there but when comparing these products to the exact same products in the major supermarkets it’s a huge saving especially the toilet rolls!haha

I don't think OP was asking for dietary advice :p. This board is for helping others to reduce spends on food shopping and groceries is it not?

Sadly we don't have a Home Bargains or a B&M around here so no bargains for me.
Ah well, my figure (or lack of!) should be grateful I suppose... Lol.

I wouldn't call most of that food just edible, but that is another discussion! :p It was actually the OP who raised the issue of 'unnecessary purchases'.

Savings today in Sainsbury's (not my preferred supermarket)

    2 x organic fruit yogurts for $3 saving 50p
5 for price of 4 organic cream of tomato soup saving 96p
    2 x organic grapes for $4 saving $1
3 x wild Alaskan salmon fillets reduced from $3 to 1.99 each saving 5.97
organic carrot cake reduced from 2.69 to 1.79 saving 90p
    Ecover Under the Sun
    fabric conditioner 2 for 2.50 saving 1.50
Ecover aloe vera and something washing up liquid 2 for $2 saving 1.06
Skyfall DVD for $7 when spending over $30 saving 7.99

I make that 19.88.. the cake is in the freezer for OH to eat over a week at some future date, tomato soup in larder for TKTC (too knackered to cook) moments, Ecover stuff under sink, salmon in freezer, yogurts for OH's lunches next week.

Other than cake and soup the food is unprocessed and the cake is hand made organic and the soup organic too.

Don't have Home Bargains etc here either. Poundland and 99p Stores sell tinned wild fish, fresh/UHT milk, water, eggs and wholemeal bread .

Can't tell you all the prices but recently from Home Bargains I have purchased
    - BTM canned mackerel in tomato sauce 500g ~90p
    - Di Vita sun dried tomatoes in oil (sulphured)
    - Bella Ricetta aubergine bruschetta sauce (all natural)
    - Aleyna roasted red peppers in vinegar (all natural)
    - pickled onions (50% extra free).

Thank you Zippy for the post, I was a little gutted when my first ever post was slated straight away and your right I wasn’t really looking for dietary advice…although perhaps should have left the Ferrero Roches alone: -P But at a healthy weight and with the hard going exercise classes I attend thought id treat myself!

The unnecessary purchases I was referring to in the original post was the big bulk buying like getting three when you only needed one not the type of product you buy.

It wasn’t only food that I was impressed with, the price of many of the other things in Home bargains was also cheap. Drinks for work are unbelievably low and toilet rolls and deodorant cannot be beaten ☺
