Painting an Ikea chest of drawers?

I have an Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers in black like this; http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40239274/
I want to paint it white. I have absolutely no idea which paint I need to use so thought I would ask on here for advice. I don't have a big budget and my only requirement is that the paint is white and hard wearing and preferably quick drying/not too smelly. Can I get away with literally putting white paint straight on to it? Also, would I need to use a brush or can I do this with a roller for an even finish?
Any advice appreciated, I really don't know the first thing about painting furniture.

i would give it a coat or 2 of this first , and then at least 2 coats of something like dulux water based satinwood .
give it a good sand down first , make sure you clean all dust off .
you may find you get the odd bit chipping off , but it's easy to touch up
to get a really nice finish , put the paint on and then lightly drag the brush over in one direction to even the paint out0 -
the existing finish is a water based varnish so repainting wont be an issue.
You say that you don't want to use any smelly (oil based) finishes but because you are going from black to white you will need to apply a hell of a lot of coats of water based paint to obliterate the dark colour.
Personally i would give it a very light sand with 240 grit silicone carbide paper. Remove the dust and then apply a coat of Zinsser BIN. It is an alcohol shellac paint. it smells of alcohol when applying it but the smell goes after 15 minutes. It is faster drying than waterbased paints and much much tougher.
Allow the Bin to dry before applying further coats. It is a creamy white so if you want you can then use waterbased eggshell/satinwood over the top once the black has been hidden.
Because the Bin dries so fast it will be difficult to get a perfectly flat finish but you can sand it flat between coats.
You can roll the Bin but do not use the standard small foam radiator rollers as they will expand and fall off the roller. A short pile roller will be fine though. Brushes and rollers can be left to soak in household ammonia. The ammonia will break down the shellac and can be poured away once the ammonia evaporates (after a day or so).
