Has antone else has 0000000000 on callback?

Just had one of those silent calls. When I did callback to find out who rang I was told it was from number as above ..10...0,s.

  • Clearly, its a computer making a random number call with no-one then being available to handle it at the 'calling' call centre.

The number has been masked, hence 00000 . . . , and that probably indicates it came from outside UK and therefore beyond UK jurisdiction with regard to TPS or any other controls.
The bankers stole my pension (and everyone else's). It should have earned a lot of money, but they took their bonus pot first.

Er, the number has not been masked - that is te number sent forward for display. It is more properly called CLIP (Calling Line Identity Presentation), and is part of a digital switch - not limited to call centres.

Leaving the field blank means anyone with Anonymous Call Rejection will not receive the call, but filling it with 0's is accepted as valid (even though it plainly isn't) and the call connects.

Sadly, only the network delivering the network knows the real origination number, and they will not disclose it to you.

That, in most people's books, is what is understood by masking the original number.

    from dictionary.com:
    mask
noun: anything that disguises or conceals
    verb:
    to disguise or conceal
    Synonyms: veil, screen, cloak, cover

Shame the dictionary s technically incompeten then. A 'mask' also has holes. Masking and mapping are terms used to describe different functions. On a digital switch a mask is used to Pre-set the general number up to but excluding the last few digits of the extension in use. The mask could be 0121-221 1XXX, but the digital switch inserts the extension number being used into the Pre-formed CLIP so a recognisable and dialable number results.

So a PABX extension 234 will send forward both parts so the call recipient receives 0121-221 1234 as a composite. Mapping, OTOH is when the integral extension bears no relation to the line number used to call it back. This aping as nothing to do with te dictionary explanations of grid references, northings or magnetic north.

Back on point - the number is not disguised - that would be illegal, but the real line number is not there until the switch inserts it into the call set up stream. Nothing masked, just incompetence.
  • Talking in simple English layman's terms, as I think most readers here would not be conversant with the intricacies of pabx and digital switching. It is not beneficial to confuse people with the 'in-house' technicalities.

If the number is visible, it is open.
If it is not visible, it is masked.

That's without even seeking the endorsement of the Plain English Campaign.
