Cannot take ownership of folder

Yesterday I upgraded from Kaspersky 2011 to 2013 on my pc. Today I noticed that my "Z" drive was no longer showing in "my computer". I cannot say for certain that it didn't disappear before I updated Kaspersky, but that is the only thing I have changed recently.
Anyway, after googling it seemed I might need to map the network drive. So I clicked on that, only one network folder came up, which was the right one, and I was able to map it. Inside the network drive there is a "sharedDocs" folder and inside that is "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos" and "Reallusion" (whatever that is). The Reallusion folder is accessible, but clicking on the other three brings up the message that I do not have permission to access them. (This is a home pc and I am classed as administrator, but just in case I went into the services.msc, right clicked on services and selected "run as administrator". Still no luck. So then I came across instructions to change ownership of folders. All goes swimmingly until I click on the ok buttons to navigate back to the "Advanced Security Settings for My Pictures" screen, then when I press ok it says "unable to set new owner on My Pictures Access is denied".
I am getting increasingly frustrated and running out of ideas
can anyone help please?

Is your Z drive a network drive?
If so do a direct connection to it then set the permissions0 -

Firstly, thank you for trying to help.
I'm afraid I'm not very up on technical terms, but will explain what I used to have and what I've got now and hopefully you can make sense of it.
Actually, have just realised what I said before is completely wrong. I think I'd better start at the beginning.
When I opened Computer I used to have the OS (C), DVD, some greyed out drives which came on if plugging anything in, Q and what I think was called Safe Run Shared Folder. Today I discovered the Safe Run Shared Folder had gone. That folder had come with the pc, I did not add it. There were various things in it that I think were there already and then I had created a Z folder to put all our photos and movies in, so there were various folders inside the Z folder. So, no the Z folder I had was not a network drive, but I had got muddled earlier and was thinking the Safe Run Shared Folder was labelled Z, now I remember it did not have a letter attached to it.
In trying to find this folder with all my pics and movies in, I was googling and somehow got onto the subject of mapping the drive. When I did that and browsed, it pulled up a shared network folder called "playroom", (which is just the name we selected when setting up the pc) and in that I saw the folder "SharedDocs" and in that the "My Pictures". The "SharedDocs" folder is quite big (236GB) and I knew that the folder with all the photos etc in was quite big, so I jumped to the wrong conclusion that this was my missing folder. Hence my previous post because it wouldn't let me access it. Because I mapped it, the SharedDocs folder is now showing up when I click on "Computer" and I now notice that it is exactly the same size as the C drive, so clearly they are one and the same. My C drive should be about 479 GB, so it seems that the Safe Run Shared Folder must have just dropped out of the system altogether rather than just playing hard to find. Do you agree?
Don't know how that would have happened. Luckily I did a system image just last weekend, so will not have lost everything. Just got to try to work out how to extract just the folder I want from that now! Seems to be 9 sections, 7 really small, one just over 6 gb and the other 395 gb, but I've got no idea how to restore just one of them (probably the one I need is the 6gb). So if you can advise on that too, it would be appreciated.
Unless you have any other ideas on how to restore the Safe Run Shared Folder?
PS - can you tell me how to "unmap" the SharedDocs folder that I shouldn't have mapped please?0 -
I'm still slightly confused, but I think that you created a folder called Z (not a separate drive) and that disappeared when you upgraded Kaspersky. I don't think I've ever called a folder by a single letter, but I wonder if somehow during the upgrade something has got confused between folder and drive naming.
If it was me I would be tempted to restore completely from the system image, change any folders with a single letter name to a proper name, then try the Kaspersky upgrade again.0 -
I'm pretty sure the Safe Run stuff was put there by Kaspersky.
The Safe Run For Applications feature allowed you to run an application within the protection of Kaspersky. This was intended for applications you weren't sure about.
In case the application was malicious, the Safe Run mode stopped an application having access to the rest of your system.
Because you might actually want to share files with such an application, there was a folder that bridged the gap between your normal folders and the ones within the Safe Mode. This is (I think) what that folder was designed for.
However Kaspersky have, for whatever reason, removed the Safe Run feature from Kaspersky 2013. I think this is why your folder has disappeared.
I don't know how to bring the Safe Run folder back or even whether you can. You may be able to get help from Kaspersky on that issue though.0 -
Thank you all for your advice.
You are right Jivesinger, the safe run folder was put there by Kaspersky. When I googled safe run folder, I saw answers mentioning Kaspersky. Doh, I was using it as a separate space to store my photos, etc! Am so glad I backed up.
agrinnall suggests that I restore completely from the system image. I have to say I am a little nervous about doing this - have never done so before and am worried something will go wrong and I will lose everything! Is there a way to access the system image and just extract what I need? If not, guess I will have to bite the bullet and keep everything crossed. So am I correct in thinking that the system image will bring back the previous version of kaspersky as that is what was installed on the system at the time of the image?0 -
you should be backing up to an external device (and dvd's) really before considering a restore from backup.
http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx these backups are easily mounted to pick out individual files/folders, windows virtual hard disk backups can be mounted as follows.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/566-virtual-hard-disk-create-attach-vhd.html
rights issues can usually be solved by changing permissions or taking ownership, you shouldn't have to resort to backups.
http://www.voidtools.com/ might help find out the exact location of your data, rather than mappings or symbolic links/libraries.!!

Thanks for the advice. The system image I backed up was to an external hard drive. Macrium looks good for future use though, and I see they can be mounted to pick out individual files, although with a vhd file being on your computer, I guess you are limited as to what size it can be?0 -
don't really understand the question?
back to the original question, where is the folder c:\what where the data is, has z: been unmapped?!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Closed, I don't think there ever was a Z: I think it was a folder named Z (see post #3).0

Here's a handy couple of .reg files that add/remove a 'Take Ownership' option from the right/click Explorer menu ...
