Buy an old banger or opt for short-term lease?

Options
We don't have a car due to living in London and not needing one. However, we're about to make an unexpected move to the country and will need a vehicle to take us the 20mins to and from the train station. We're hopefully moving back to NZ by the end of the year so we're looking at 3-6 months of country living.
I was thinking of leasing a car short-term - so far, (and this is far from my area of expertise!) I haven't found anything better via Google than about £445pcm for a three-month lease. The attraction with that idea was insurance etc being included in the deal.
Then I read the 'bangernomics' thread and wondered if we shouldn't just spend £500 on an oldie and hope that it's a goodie. In this case, we would happily restrict our driving to train station/supermarket trips only, ie no motorways etc.

I'd be really interested to know what all the experts out there would do in this situation as there's bound to be something I've overlooked! Any input appreciated.
