Not sure whats going on with our gas..

Options
Weve recently moved into a new house. Both gas & elec are with EON who we have never used before.

We have an old fashioned elec meter and a digital gas meter.

We have just recieived our bill dated 2nd feb-13th feb it totals £71.45.

Bearing in mind we didnt actually move into the house until the 9th (got the keys on the 1st but house was empty till the 9th)this seems an extreme cost?

The gas seems to be the high bit and i wondered if anyone knew what might be causing it seeing as were out most of the day and only have the heating on set times and turn some of the rads off. I have a guy out next week to check the meter but am scared to use anything as can't afford bills like this!
Any ideas please?!

Do you have a metric gas meter but they are charging you for an imperial one?

What was your start meter reading on 2nd?
Is this the one you provided?
What was your meter reading on the 13th?
How was this obtained? (e.g. did a meter reader call)
What is the meter reading today?
  • Hi thanks for the replys.

We got another bill yesterday for £82..confused why we are getting bills so soon?

Dealing with the gas as sorted the elec bit out i hope.

The bill dated the 2nd to the 13th is for £57.89..this is for 4 days usage as we moved in on the 9th. It is a digital box and read 41120 as previous and 41238 as present..not sure what that means? it says 1,314 killowatt hours used. The 41120 is what the lettings agent says it was when we took the keys on the 1st.

Just called them as had an email to say the apt tommorow has been cancelled yet nothing else. Called and got put on hold after 20 mins and cut off so called back fuming and got someone out again but not till the 12th of march. Not impressed, the reason we moved was to reduce bills yet all that's happening is they are going mad!

    Thanks

Did you actually take opening reads on the 9th and register for an account then? If so, you should not be getting bills from the 2nd. It sounds like you have allowed the EA to register for you, which is always a very bad idea. Your account, your bills, your responsibility. If you can prove that your occupancy started on the 9th (which you would if you'd phoned up on the day) then you will be rebilled from that date. You'll also have been placed on the supplier's Standard tarif by default if you didn't specify, which is the most expensive.
You are aware that if the gas meter is found not to be faulty then you will be charged for the replacement? It's not possible to test it on site, it will simply be replaced and sent for testing. Very premature to assume meter error at this stage. You've used 118 meter units of gas according to those readings, and that converts correctly to 1,314 kWh if you have a metric meter. At about 4p per kWh, £57.89 is correct.
It would help if you said how the house is heated and hot watered, how large, and what other gas appliances there are?

41120 is your start reading (I suppose you'll have to trust the letting agent if you didn't verify it yourself)
41238 is the reading on 13 Feb (You've not said how it was obtained, actual/customer/estimated)

That means 118 cubic metres of gas which they have calculated as 1314 kWh (sounds about right - the bill should explain exactly how this was derived)

1314kWh is calculated as costing £57.89 in accordance with your tariff (again sounds reasonable without knowing exactly what your tariff detail is)

So what is the meter reading today, please?

If you had a valid tenancy agreement and the keys you have to pay the bill from the 1st not the 9th. It's not the landlords fault if you chose not to move in, however the landlord is liable for the supply up to the date your tenancy began.

You should be reading your own meters and supplying your own details to the energy company, never trust letting agents or landlords they make mistakes and occasionally they outright falsify information so you pay for the landlords energy or the previous tenants energy. Was the heating and hot water on or off between the 1st and the 9th?
