Recommendations For Travel Toys For a Small Child Please

I am taking my children on a long flight soon and was hoping that some of you may be able to recommend travel toys for my daughter who will be 22 months old at the time. Since it is a flight I was thinking that usual noisy singing toys would be very unfair on the passengers both in front and behind us. Has anybody got any experience of anything that is quiet that they have seen keeping small children entertained?

I will of course be playing with her too but was hoping that I could find a few things that she could play with independently.

My kids used to have story tapes that went with books, and a cheap Sony Walkman + earphones for the child so they could listen along themselves. Obviously you'd use more up to date technology but the principle is still good.

Crayons and a colouring book or a travel aquadraw. Little people (duplo ones, Happyland etc). iPhone/iPad games and movies (you can download programmes from the iplayer).

little board books, drawing/colouring books and crayons, a couple of small teddies/dolls for imaginative play, and lots of little snacks/drinks cartons. On long haul I'd imagine your little one might sleep too.

We did a flight to New Zealand last christmas when DD was nearly two, I packed a whole bag of toys and the only thing that really got played with was this book
http://www.usborne.com/catalogue/catalogue.aspx?id=3919 it kept her occupied for hours trying to find and name different things.

And two dolls with a bag of dressing up clothes like this http://www.mulberrybush.co.uk/toy-store/detail-dress-up-people.aspx. She loved my iPhone too.

We are going to thailand in a few weeks and won't be taking much at all, just a few playmobile people, ipad mini and a book or two. Ooh and snacks like plain popcorn and pretzels.

    Sticker books
  • Work out their favourite toys they like now, then hide them until the flight. Wrap them up, so they have something fun to open and give them the items throughout the flight. You know they will be guaranteed to enjoy them and they will be overjoyed to see them again.

Finger puppets are also great fun, a smallish car they can drive along the seats

Thank you all for all of the brilliant suggestions. :D. Unfortunately though her most favourite toy is a football and I am not sure it would be suitable for in flight entertainment.

Lol - the guys on the plane would love it hun - but the flight attendants might confiscate it!
I would suggest either sticker books or those felt pictures? also finger or glove puppets, one of those junior etch a sketch things? my grandson loved his when he was about littleuns age.
  • Colouring in was always a good one for my daughter. Crayola do a colour & wipe thing or the Aquadoodle as suggested before. She was pretty good and would sit through a film so see what's on (get some kid sized headphones too as earphones on planes are useless for little ones!) or download as suggested (or portable DVD player)
