Faulty Gas Installation

Not sure if this is in the wrong place, so feel free to move to right section if not,
Quick summary, Bought gas fire in December last year,. had it installed a couple of days later, all was good for 2 weeks when our pay as you go meter cut out and told us call help, turns out we had a gas leak, British Gas came out and sealed it all of and said it was the fire, they called National Grid who came out and said the fire was unsafe and we were at risk. The fumes were going up the chimney, but if the wind had been blowing, they could've come into the home. Health & Safety were informed, Gas Safe were also informed. We were told we had to give the company another chance at putting the fire right, and that night, they came out and redid the fire. All was good again, until Gas Safe came out 3 days later to check that the fire was safe. Yet again, the fire was deemed unsafe and sealed of. Turns out the fire had been installed incorrectly from start to finish, with wrong pipe being used, fittings left of it, and the reflector plate being put on upside down, these are just a few probs with it. In total, there was 9 things wrong with the installation.
Gas Safe gave the company 2 weeks to put the fire right. They didn't. At the start of the 3rd week, we were promised it would be. But it didnt get done. It was 4 weeks after that the company actually got someone else in from another company to come and fix it, as the original bloke had been suspended and was on a course for gas something or other.. (have been told different stories though), now the company owner has rang us and said he had written a cheque out for the installation cost and for a little bit extra on top for us as a good will gesture for us being so patient. He was supposed to drop this of last weekend, but convieniently forgot his cheque book, then he said he would drop it of Tuesday of last week, and guess what, he didnt turn up. Husband rang him Wednesday and he said that he would come round Thursday and we were to ring him when we were in, we rang him, straight to answer phone, so left message. I have just rang this prat again now and the chap that was suspended is back with him! Asked when or even if he had any intentions of giving us any compensation, and he said he would call us back as he was driving...
Can this chap be unsuspended from Gas work so quickly?
We have had this fire since December, but only been able to use it for 3 weeks of that time, so we have had no heating! And the risk to us and the kids doesn't even bare thinking about.
What are the chances of us getting compensation out of these guys? Zero?

Is the compo promised by this company a 'good will' gesture? Or was it ordered by Gas Safe or whoever? if it was just 'good will', you will need to quantify your losses and make a claim, taking the claim to court if necessary.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

I think the way the owner now looks at it is, the fire is fixed so go away now, lol... I was told to write to them by consumer advice and tell them i wanted them to take the fire away and to refund full costs of fire and installation. I never got to send that letter as the owner rang me the same day and offered the compensation, he just needed to know who to write cheque payable to. Then he organised for someone from another company to come and fix the fire, so we didnt persue the letter any further.
