Going down to London this weekend to watch Bradford City in the Cup final

Going to be driving... just wondering if there is any free parking near the stadium??

I'm guessing if there is parking will have to walk a fair bit

  • Parking near the ground on event days is a nightmare. There is a variable 'residents only' scheme that pretty much rules out "free" parking and all car parks within 15 mins walk of the ground will be charging £20+

Look at the tube stations at Hillingdon, Ickenham and Uxbridge - they all offer parking for £1 a day at weekends (IIRC). The tubes are actually very well managed. The police do control crowds on Olympic Way on the way back to Wembley Park but I've never had to wait more than 20-25mins to get from the ground to the train. The trains going westbound will also be quieter as most of the crowds head into Central London.

There's also the added bonus that you avoid the traffic from the North Circular back to the M1 and instead, are less than 10 mins away from the M25.

You could park in Stanmore (end of Jubilee line) plenty of free parking in surrounding roads on a Sunday, done it a few times myself with no problems, 10 min tube Journey (5 stops) to Wembley

If coming from Bradford I would assume you will use the M1 rather than the M40? The top suggestion above is good for anyone arriving via the M40, but not so good from the M1.

The tube options for the M1 are:

To come off at J4 and drive to Stanmore Station (London Rd, Stanmore, Middx, HA7 4PD) on the Jubilee Line that will take you direct to Wembley Park, allow about 15- 20 mins journey time. There is a car park and street parking on a Sunday

Leave at J5 and drive to Watford Metropolitan Line station (Cassiobury Park Avenue, Watford, Herts, WD18 7LE) and take a Metropolitan Line train to Wembley Park. Again, about 20 mins journey time. Again there is a car park and street parking too, but be careful as Watford do operate some of their CPZ's on a Sunday.

Another option is to leave the M1 at J6A and join the M25 travelling towards Heathrow Airport (anti clockwise direction). Leave the M25 at J18 and at the top of the slip (there are lights) turn left on to the A404 towards Rickmansworth. Follow the A404 for approx 1 mile and you will come to a large roundabout. Do the equivalent of a right turn and almost immediately on your left you will see Rickmansworth Station (Station Approach, Rickmansworth, Herts, WD3 1QY). There is a car park at the staion (follow the signs as not easy to see as shared with Waitrose!) and street parking close by too. Again a Metropolitan Line train will go straight to Wembley Park in about 20 mins.

This Sunday there are no trains North of Rickmansworth on the Amersham/Chesham branch of the Met Line due to Engineering works, so Rickmansworth will be the end of the line that day. If you go from Watford that is on another branch of the Met Line, so on the return journey make sure you get a train going to the correct destination, as some Met Line trains also go to Uxbridge!! All Met Line trains will stop at Wembley Park on the way there though.

As well as being easier to park you will also get back to the M1 and the homeward journey quicker too if you use these options. Wembley and the surrounding area on a match day can and does get gridlocked, especially the routes to the motorways. And in any case, Brent Council operate draconian parking retrictions on event days and you'll get towed/ticketed if you park anywhere within a mile or so of the stadium.

Enjoy the match and remember the last time you were in London for a cup game you lost!!! So good luck this time. I'll buzz off now?

A good Yorkshire man looking for free parking!

It's nice to see two normal clubs in a final.

    Good luck and enjoy yourself

I've tired plenty of ways to get to Wembley over the years. I've found the fastest is to park at High Wycombe Railway station, about 2 miles off the M40, then get Chiltern Railways direct to Wembley Stadium station. Parking is a few pound. Train about £12 return. Takes about half and hour.

With games with 90,000 there I've still got away after the game within about 20 mins.

Only problem is the M40 is not really the route from Bradford. OK for West Midlands and north west clubs, but not Yorkshire or north east. Would add at least an hour to the driving journey. Otherwise it is a good alternative to the tube.
