Aldershot Urban Extension - no buy zone?

I know Aldershot doesn't have a great reputation but the crime rates are much better than Basingstoke & Bracknell. I like the feel of the town and the Victorian houses/buildings are beautiful (to me).
I'd like to think that Aldershot is an up and coming area, especially with this new urban regeneration project. It doesn't have massive unemployment problems being a mostly military employed squaddy town, the Nepalese/Gurkha population are friendly, polite, courteous and respectful and make perfect neighbours
And we have a dry ski slope, too!

@surbybird thanks Kate! How long have you lived in Aldershot for? Do you like it? Do you have kids at school there? Any streets to definitely avoid?
I'm currently in Reading but work in Farnboro'

Is the above bit still fenced off ?
If so it was an arms dump and had very very very very low level radio activity hence why it was fenced off.0 -

You know what, I have even driven that far up the road :-/ I've always just come up from the south and turned left into Mathews Terrace. I have a second viewing tomorrow so I'll have a scooch around and take some photos.0 -
Also, anyone know how I can find out what the current owner paid for the property? It's not listed on zoopla or ourproperty.co.uk0

Yes, definitely nothing wrong with Aldershot. Brings back happy memories as a kid (my father was in the army, so we lived in army accommodation). I felt very safe there, always did at army housing estates. What I would give to live in such an area again.
The area you are looking to buy in seems very nice and green (at the moment!).0 -

I moved here 4 years ago.
My motivation was that it was cheap to buy the kind of house I wanted - Victorian 3 bed semi with period features was less than £200k as opposed to £350K+ in SW London where I used to live - close to open countryside and with good transport links. We're less than 15 min walk from the station, 15 min drive from the M3 and A3 and we're in a nice quiet road. I think it's okay, but as you would expect, I've met other people here who think it's rubbish! Horses for courses, I guess.
Good points - Westgate opened last year so we got new restaurants, health centre, a Morrisons and a cinema. We've got Princes Hall and the West End Centre for culture and entertainment, and Aldershot Town FC (they're not doing very well at the moment). We also have a dry ski slope and a lido. Blackwater Valley, Surrey Hills and the Basingstoke Canal are on the doorstep if you like the great outdoors and there's Manor Park (they're rebuilding the skate park there). For young people there's the park, cinema, there's a games/pool place but in fairness, not much else.
For me, the downsides to living in Aldershot are the mediocre rail service (only 2 direct trains an hour to London) and a relatively sparse shopping centre. There's a traveller site on the edge of the town which is causing some friction at the moment as the council want to make it bigger.
I don't have school aged children any more but most of the neighbours do and they all seem to go locally rather than be driven to schools out of the area.
I quite like it here, it suits my needs. You'll get different responses from other people though.
PM me if you want any more info.
