try windirstat to see what's taking up the space, might be hidden files :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • I would use something like CCleaner to clear all the temporary files out and see what happens after that.
You can get CCleaner from Piriform.com and is free.

Yes, that will get you back over 25% of your disk space. For most people, the last (most recent) image will suffice. I can't anyway see the point of keeping disk images on the primary drive. If the drive fails, you'll lose them all anyway.

vhd is a virtual hard drive, for use in testing out software on various operating systems. read more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHD_%28file_format%29
  • It could of course be backups created by the laptop's manufacturers bloatware , no one has asked which lappy it is , just passing by

Whilst it is this, it's not in this case. The Op is backing up their system drive, to, the system drive. This backup process creates VHDs that can be mounted in the WinPE in the event of a failure. They should be stored off the physical machine on an external USB driver or similar
