In my case, Amazon have always sent me a replacement unit the following day (they don't wait for you to send off the faulty unit first; you have 1 month to return the faulty unit).
Was that with a laptop, or other smaller goods?

For small stuff (thats not worth repairing, or is low value) often stores will just swap over within warranty. But for anything big (PC, TV) that costs hundreds of pounds but could be repaired in an hour you'd be crazy (as a retailer) to swap the unit out instead.

PC World repair HP laptops directly - I'm not actually sure HP will repair an HP laptop bought from PC World under warranty (I could be wrong, though).

Never heard of any of the mainstream manufacturers offering a swapover under warranty though (outside of the first month).
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

Do take point about backup etc. I've preached about it, just not done it!

There are people who back up and those that wish they'd backed up!

It was a printer that was bigger and heavier than a laptop and cost a few hundred Pounds. I think it failed after 6 months (or something like that; definitely not in the first month). Perhaps, I was lucky
