Challenging EDF bill

I suspect use of an estimate or a reading error.

A debit balance of £198 having had payments increased to £81 for several months after a credit balance does not seem right. By now the bill may be accessible online.

It seems odd to me too, I don't understand how it is possible that there has been £476 spent on elec since Oct 16th when it is not supplying heating esp when there was a credit of £91 from the summer.

Water tank has been removed as have all electric heating parts.

EDF claim that the £198 is outstanding and they have not been over paying.

I think the reason will be obvious from the bill. When you get it post the numbers *exactly* as they appear for further advice.

Speculating the supply may still be E7 and the night element may have been estimated based on historical consumption. So check the household metering. Are the numbers on the meter today "similar" to the numbers you submitted online. Alternatively, could you/Edf have inadvertently transposed the submitted numbers? Can you identify which register is day and which is night? How do the numbers on the bill compare?

Were the 16/10/12 bill readings actual or estimated?

Are you sure the DD payments have been going onto the account? When I started with EDF they didn't take any payment for a few months , despite me giving them all the details. They blamed it on a "bank error".
They also have a reputation for meaningless recalculations of DD amounts and adjusting them every time they get a reading.
Check your bills online - you can view previous bills there also - and see what payments it shows. Without being used for heating, electricity usage tends to remain pretty constant throughout the year, so you shouldn't see any great seasonal variance in kWh used.

Looks like somehow it has recorded the same reading for both day and night?
Tried to resubmit but it wouldn't allow me to and it has come up with -

We’re sorry but we haven’t been able to validate your readings. The attempted readings you’ve given us have been sent to a Customer Services Advisor who will process them within the next 24 hours. If we’re still having trouble after this time, we’ll be in touch via email

They don't have an online account currently. As said above the relevant readings need to be examined. Whilst you are waiting to get your hands on those, keep checking the meter and gathering readings on a regular basis. You could post them here if you need help working them out. You took a reading yesterday, start with that one. Take another today (24 hours later if you can) so that you have 1 days usage. Shouldn't be too hard to get to the bottom of what's gone on once you have the info.

From doing some quick sums I think that bill will get amended down by £400 once the readings are corrected. They will then adjust the direct debit that had been set based on the erroneous meter readings. Problem solved I hope!

Fingers crossed, they said they will look at it within 24 hours so will see what happens. I have set them up an online account, how often is it best to submit readings to avoid these issues in future.

    I'm female, we don't hang about :D

It was bloody cold out there though lol
  • Blimey, there is one thing I can say about EDF customer services and that is they are fast!

The amended bill is £223 in credit and will be able to view it online after 24 hours but no mention of changing the DD but I assume this will be done automatically with the new calculations?
