Electricity bill

please can any one help me;
i pay my electricity bill 1/4 which i have paid each time. the other day the man came to read my electric, making a comment about not being able to find us, and that the bill would be high!
I rang british gas who supply my electricity, who said the bill bill would be approx £1900.00, why i ask;
because the meter was last read in march 02, he said in march 03 some one rang a reading through, which i didn,t do, so thats rubish.
Do any of you know if this can be challenged, are they legally required to read the bill, if so how long in between and how long can they go back for, and at what rate.
This is causing me a great headacke, although i still haven't had a bill!

    Think they can go back 6 years.

    Do you have the reading when you moved in or was that a long time ago, if you did you could check against current reading.

    If they are right and you used the power you will have to pay but you may be able to get time to do that and maybe some reduction. You will have to talk to them about it.

    Presumably all your past bills have been estimated readings?

    Look at your last bill and compare the reading on that with the actual meter reading - post them on here.

    There have been plenty of cases like yours - do a search - and BG will normally reduce your bill by a large amount and allow you to pay back your debt over a couple of years.

    There are some knowledgeable BG employees who post on this Forum and they will no doubt let you know BG's current policy in this type of case.

    Caroline, I have read postings on this board where massive reductions are made in such cases. Just hang in there, get dates, letters rather than phone calling, find out the rules and so on.
