Getting car keys cut without an original

Hi. More car woes... boo.

I have a P reg Vauxhall Corsa. No immobiliser or anything. We only had one key when we bought the car off a friend (idiot me didn't get round to getting a spare cut). Got home from work the other day, got distracted by a delivery of wood and now the key is gone along with my house keys. I know they must be around somewhere because I got home! Have searched house and garden top to bottom. Managed to break into my car and get into the boot from the inside but they are not in there.

Basically I would like to know, is it possible to get a key cut without the original key and if so how and how much would it cost? I considered changing the ignition barrel and locks as you can buy them from the breakers or eBay but apparently you need the key to get the barrel out!!! I would also have to break the petrol cap off as that is on the same key.

Isn't retrospect a wonderful thing....

Thanks

Assuming the keys haven’t been changed previously then Vauxhall will be able to give you the key code and cut some new keys from the reg/vin number.

If the locks have been changed previously then a proper locksmith should be able to cut one if you take one of the old locks to him so he can take it apart and examine the tumblers.

But, as the keys disappeared outside your house I’d be concerned about the security aspect. I’m pretty sure both our home & car insurance will pay for new locks in the case of lost keys.

Have you checked the fridge and interrogated any household toddlers?

    Thanks.

I was concerned about that too but we live in a quiet cul de sac which is not a through route even on foot. I'm sure our neighbours would have given them back, especially as they all had a good laugh at me trying to break into my own car. I'm pretty sure they will turn up somewhere in the house, but who knows when!! Our toddler is normally pretty good at finding "lost" things and has been happily looking for "Daddy's keys" all weekend. I'm pretty sure the locks haven't been changed so I'll get in touch with Vauxhall on Tuesday. Thanks a lot.

I'd restack the wood myself ;)

I seem to recall getting the key code from the hatch lock on a Cavalier many years ago...perhaps the Corsa may be similar?

Found the keys!!!:j :rotfl: :rotfl: :j

Decided to search the whole coat rack. I have an outdoory coat with a pouch pocket that I haven't worn for months, my normal coat sits on top of it. Somehow my keys ended up in the pouch pocket, must have lifted out when I got my wallet out then dropped in there! What are the chances?

Anyway, off to get 15 spares cut tomorrow!

    Thanks for your suggestions.
