iPhone 3gs randomly blacking out ...

Hi everyone,
my iPhone 3gs keeps blacking out for no apparent reason - and the only way to get it to come back on is to put it on its charger.
I've got two theories as to whats going on but wondering if anyone has had the same problem.
1) I bought a charger of amazon thinking it was legit - didn't read the comments but it had a high star rating - after a while kept getting an error message saying the phone doesn't recognise this device. Actually went and read the comments and people were saying don't buy .. same problem as me - the high stars were for things like delivery or by people who must have commented straight away when it actually did work! So was wondering if this has done something to the battery which is causing it to cut out.
2) This model can't handle the updates. It seemed to happen after the i0s5 update - but so did the new charger incident!
In the case of theory 1 - would a new battery help - and has anyone bought them online and used the little tool kit? - obviously being old its not under warranty anymore so don't really want to send it to apple.
Thanks
