I bought Western Digital WD 1TB HDD from Curry by around End of September 2012.
I just found out since last week that my HDD stop working, e.g the HDD is recognized bit when I tried to click it. there is a message
"the request can not be performed because of I/O device error"
I have tired many ways such as replacing the cable etc I still receive the same message. Si I gave up
There is one year limited warranty for this product.
Today I phoned curry the guys in customer support informed me that I need to contact WD directly and it is up to WD and not Curry to resolve this problem. my question is that :
- Is that true that in this case I am the person who need to contact WD and not Curry. I have read somewhere that my contract (as customer) is with Curry and not with WD as I have nothing to do with WD.
- The other problem is that I do not know how to contact WD the guys from curry is so irresponsible and just inform Google and find their website. TBH I do not need to be told if it is just a matter of Google).
I undesranstand that if I bought item from Argos (John Lewis AFAIK) whatever brand it is I could always come back to them and return the item when the item is faulty during the warranty. I understn
I need to know my right that If I did not get response from WD I could come back to Curry and fight my case. Could anyone who knows or have experience about this suggest me the course of action that I need to do ?

Hi adindas,
It is true that your warranty is with Western Digital and not Currys, as Currys are not the manufacturer of the product. That doesn't mean that Currys aren't obliged to help you, because as the supplier they are obliged to act as an intermediary if required, but for that you would need to take the product back to a Currys store so they can verify the problem is something covered by the warranty. What happens next will depend on the value of the product and what the issue is - they may issue you a replacement which would be refunded to Currys by WD, or they may call or send the product back to WD, and your contact would thereafter be with them. You can go directly to WD (call them to confirm that the issue is one covered by the warranty, then send it back for a replacement or refund) but it's not true that Currys can turn you away if you go to them to do it.
Though it certainly doesn't excuse the person you spoke to being unhelpful, there actually isn't very much they can do to verify the problem over the phone, so I would suggest taking the product to the support desk at the store you bought it from (or wherever your nearest store is). Someone who works in the store deals with these issues all of the time and will be able to do more to help you than someone from phone support.
Hope this helps (Though dealing with these things wasn't my department, I used to work at Currys and picked up a few things!).0 -
Is this an external hard drive?
If so, have you tried it on another computer, just to confirm it is the drive and not the computer that is the problem?
As to whether you contact Currys or WD...
It depends on whether you want the line of least resistance or not.
I would go direct to WD.
All Currys would do is pass the thing to WD, so just cut out the middle man.
But first, as mentioned earlier, be sure the drive is at fault.0
