Not if their is already a policy in force which covers the use of the vehicle, whether that is a specific policy or if someone else is driving it under a DOC extension.
Since the OP says:although I have comprehensive insurance,
I read that to mean that there is already a policy in place in relation to the vehicle. In that case, Joe's post is correct. The insurers WILL pay out. If there is no insurance policy then they are clearly never going to pay out regardless of the MOT status.
You are correct in saying that an insurer can refuse to offer a new policy if there is no MOT. They can refuse to offer a new policy on just about any grounds unless it's a discriminatory one banned by legislation.
However, until the OP clarifies what insurance is already in place, we can't tell what the situation is.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.

By making such a comment all you are doing is making yourself look stupid."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

So if I was to post a question such as:
"I purchased a car 4 months ago and the engine has just seized up. Although I have a warranty, will I have to pay for the repair?"
Would you assume that the warranty was for the car that the question was relating to, or do you think it might be for a totally different one which provides no cover for the car I asked about and I only mentioned it to confuse everyone?
As the OP stated:My car is currently declared SORN, although I have comprehensive insurance, and I want to bring it back into use.0 -
Well seeing as it has now turned to throwing insults around like school children, I'll be ignoring this thread.
Op: For your own peace of mind, ring your insurers.
Everyone else, it was almost diplomatic. Well done, you're making progress.0 -

So you are choosing to ignore the fact you were wrong. Very mature of you.0 -

Do I have a neon sign above my head saying idiot? - Seropisly, please tell me, I want to shake off whatever keeps causing this attitude towards me.
