Nursery school admissions

Hi everyone

I wonder if anyone can help - My SIL wants to put my nephew in a nursery school that doesnt come within the boundary of her council. She wants to put him in a nursery and school that falls within a different authority.

Is she able to do this?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I can only answer for my own area but whenever I have applied for a place for my children at nursery/infants/juniors there is a list in which you are told the criteria people will be allocated places on. The very last criteria has been people from outside the town/county. So if your area is the same yes you can apply but you will be bottom of the list, so it will depend on how many places are available and how many want them.

When it is time to apply, the Council send a list of schools and we choose from that list which one to put our children in - if it is outside the area we cannot choose those as they are not on the list and do not have a 'code'. However, I am sure that maybe if she approaches the school and asks how subscribed they are and explain the situation they will be sure to help.

She must remember though, generally, the children at Nursery go to the same school so if she is intending on the child going to a different school it is a little unfair on him/her as they do form bonds with certain children at Nursery school and then she will have to leave them all and start again.

We live near the border of 2 local authories and have been able to access both areas nurseries and primary schools. With nursery schools by us, it is up to the individual school who they accept, it seems common for it to go by date of birth, i.e. September babies (beginning of school year) are given places before August babies (end of school year). When applying to primary school (my 4 year old starts Reception in September), we applied separately to both authories (this also meant we were able to put 2 first choices down!).

When thinking of applying for schools it is worth checking out entry critia with the education department at the council, also whether or not the school has been oversubscribed in the past.

There is a legal ruling - called the Greenwich judgement - which means that one authority cannot prevent people from another authority gaining places at their schools.

In practice, it all depends on how oversubscribed the school is. If the school (and nursery) have places then anyone who applies will be able to get in -regardless of where they live. If the school is oversubscribed, then the school/Local Authoriity will use the admission rules to determine who gets in. The admission rules will vary but will probably give priority to siblings and distance.

basically, there is nothing to stop you SIL sending her son to a school in a different authority providing they have sufficient spaces.
