anti smoking drug name?

hi

Someone I know was telling me about their attempt to quit smoking. They have been given some pills by the doc to take for a week, then another one for a week after, then another one then that should be it and they become a non smoker. You continue to smoke for 3 weeks whilst taking them but cut down to zero by the end.
I have forgotten the name of the pills and wonder if anyone here knows it and does it really work?

    Is it Champix?

I believe they work, both my parents in law used them and gave up smoking.

Back on them now though, their problem being that they like to drink and smoke, and can't seem to give both up :o
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

My ex used them but he started again. Don't think he was that keen to give up really though.

I got pregnant and gave up instantly but is quite a drastic measure so wouldn't recommend - particularly if you're male!!

I used Champix. You start taking them and during the first two weeks you pick a date to stop smoking (I picked day 14:o). On the day you choose you stop smoking ! You then continue to take the Champix every day.

I found it really easy and I was a heavy smoker for 35 years and nothing else I tried had worked. I eventually stopped taking the Champix when I realised after about 8 weeks that I kept forgetting to take them anyway and I stilll didn't want a cigarette.

That was 5 years ago and I've never smoked since.

thanks, Champix it seems to be.

I'm going to recommend it to a personal trainer that I saw having a fag behind the gym today when he thought no-one was about.

There are Zyban and Champix. You can't really recommend either, they are prescription only and not first line - can only be used if other methods like NRT have failed. Effective for those who want to stop, much less use for those who are not ready to quit. Any good PT will be aware of the options anyway, fitness professionals ask about medication as part of assessments.

Could either be Champix or Zyban.

Champix has a very much higher success rate than Zyban, and of the two I believe it is the most regularly prescribed.
It can be bought over the internet from Lloyds chemist after a satisfactory discussion with them.

Out of interest, why would you do that? As a PT, presumably he's an adult, and will be well aware of the dangers of smoking.

I'm a smoker myself, and whilst I'm aware that it's a disgusting habit, if someone tells me to stop (especially someone I don't know at all or very well), it would annoy me! I know I should stop but who is someone else to tell me to?
  • Cleggy, you often say really sensible things, then you decide you're going to tell random people off for smoking or eating cake.

Have you ever thought you might get a smack in the gob from someone for telling them?

Me, I'd just ignore you. Someone with a temper might not. Nobody would go "oh thankyou Mr Cleggy sir, I have realised the error of my ways"...
