Creaking laptop lid

Every time that I open up and close the lid/screen on my 5 year old Tosh Satellite it creaks and recently has been getting progressively harder to open/close.
It has never been dropped or physically damaged has it has never shifted off the desk that I put it on when I bought it and I figure that it is probably due to the build up of nicotine.
Any ideas if I could spray the hinge bits with anything, WD40 or silicone spray ? I realise that I would have to mask the keyboard and the screen with polythene bags first but I am a bit wary.
I know that it's passed its sell by date and the HDD is only about 18 gig but apart from the above fault it still works O.K. but failing a cure, it looks like a trip to Lidl on Thursday.
