i have moved home with a few cats a few times and i always, keep them in for at least the first week.
They normally go off and find a safe place to hide (my cat hides behind the sofa) and come out when its quiet and they feel safe. They will explore teh new home in their own time and slowly put there scent on everything.
After 1-2 weeks i let my cats outside, but i do the old trick of butter on their paws, i dont know if it really works, but i think it does!!! Also the first couple of times i go and sit in the garden and watch them loop about if they look like they are venturing a bit to far or like they are going to bolt for it i bring them in. Keep doing this a few times and theys hould be fine.
The only annoying thing is having to have a cat litter tray again  I hate waking to the smell of cat poo in my house :mad:0 -
I kept my cat in for the first day or so.
She was quite an adventurous cat and as we got her from a home, due to being a stray, she was quite able to look after herself, so she was allowed to go into the back garden after two days.
She usually looked around the local area, then came home for her dinner and was fine after that!An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T:rotfl: :rotfl:

we've always kept our cats in for about 2 weeks whenever we've moved into a new house.Fight for clean hospitals, C-DIFF takes lives

Don't do what my friend did - moved out and took the 16-year-old arthritic family cat with her and then let her out without a collar, in December, in -5c temperatures  That was stupidity at its highest IMO.

Here's a step by step guide from the Blue Cross on moving house with lots of tips, hints and guidelines. They recommend at least two weeks, I've always kept mine in for 3 or 4 weeks.
