EDF Energy Backdate - Is It A Con?
I reached a dead end 3 years ago searching for my gas supplier. Now EDF Energy has contacted me with a 'goodwill gesture' of 2 years back-billing but they want to charge me a current rate of 5.573p. The current (and historic) rate doesn't appear to be published anywhere, but the new rate from 15/06 is 3.639p. If this is a 10.2% reduction I can't see how the current rate can be 5.573p. I'm allegedly on a Single Fuel standard tariff. This looks like a con to me - where can I find current and historic rates going back 2 years?

Your definately paying over the odds, it sounds like your on an Independant Gas Transporter (IGT) tariff . This means transco didn't lay the pipes its was an independant company such as envoy. This was merely for the developers of the property to cut costs, which means you pay a premium on your gas.
Is it a con? Yes it is, however it's not EDF Energy's fault. As a gas only customer on this network all providers will charge you a higher rate than there core prices, albeit EDF do have probably the highest excess/premium charge.
The way out of this is to go Duel Fuel, that way the provder can reduce your costs by taking you off this IGT Tariff and offering you standard prices with discounts. If you combine your elec with EDF you will switch on to the 3.69p per kwh. YOU will not get this rate remaining as you are, as you probably fathomed out that this reduction of 5.57 to 3.69 is a hell of alot more than 10%!!
Hope that makes sense

I am confused.
Are not the prices quoted above for Tier 1 i.e. the first 1,143kWh per quarter?
The price for the majority of gas consumed(Tier 2) is normally about 2.5p.0 -

Hey Cardew,
The price quoted is for Tier 1, didn't get to Tier 2!
The IGT price with EDF Energy is 5.57 p/p kwh on Tier 1 and 2.55 on Tier 2.
If bjthedj was on standard Gas pirces with EDF Tier 1 would be charged at 3.63 p/p kwh pre price reduction of 10% (wef 15/06/07) not sure Tier 2 though!

No, they don't. There are several which absorb the cost.
bjthedj, if the supplier is at fault they can only back bill two years, but they can't make you pay at the current rate it has to be pro-rata. I would put in a written request to the company asking for their last two year's tariffs. The other option is you could give energywatch or ofgem a call and ask if they could provide a copy (they must keep them, whether or not they will send them out is another question).0 -

To get a correct comparison both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 prices must be quoted.
The average customer uses 20,500kWh per year. For most people approx 22% will be at Tier 1 prices and 78% at Tier 2 prices; so the tier 2 price will have a larger affect on your annual bill. If you use more than the average then a higher percentage will be on Tier 2.
The point being that a high Tier 1 price does not always mean Tier 2 will also be high; and of course Ebico charge a flat rate for all their gas, albeit with the recent cuts in gas prices from other companies, their price is not as competitive unless you are a very low user.0 -

Completely agree and understand what you are saying. I do know that Tier 2 with EDF on the IGT network is still extremely high in relation to core prices and other companys tariffs.

Thanks for that Tripled, I did not realise a few companies absorb the cost.
