Will santander honour cheque if funds paid in??

Options
Checked my Santander internet banking at 01.20 early this morning. Had a cheque presented to my account for £450 .00 that I was not expecting. By just after 2am I had credited the account with £600 by faster payment. Do you think it will be paid or bounced? Not fussed if they charge me for the privalage this time but would like to get it paid. When this has happened before I have rung up and asked but no one could definately say. Just got the standard line about making sure funds were available the previous day. Was told just had to wait to see. Cant remember what the outcome was though!!

I know that HSBC would pay it in a similar situation but that doesnt help now....

I'm not a Santander customer, but any bank I've dealt with will do so in this situation.

I work for a very small bank - we make our decision regarding whether to bounce a cheque due to lack of funds around lunch time.

If the account was funded before around noon, we will pay the cheque

  • Yes that is what I would like to expect and what would seem fair. But Santander seem to play by their own variable rules. I have hd a standing order go out this morning after all this happened. Would that imply that the cheques would go out too?

I will try and ring up later but I am abroad and dont have my telephone banking info and its always a hassle getting through at the best of times just to probably be told"we cant say its down to an automated system you will have to wait and see tomorrow"

Santander allow you to pay in by 4pm to avoid charges on direct debits. Whether the same holds true for cheques I could not say

How was the cheque unexpected, surely you wrote it in the first place?
  • Yes but it was paid in by the recipient sooner than we agreed by genuine mistake

When you write a cheque, you're required to have the funds available in the account to clear it. Otherwise you're writing a dud cheque. Planning/hoping to have the funds in place at some future date is not sufficient.
  • I know what the rules say, thank you. However my question was based on whether or not they would pay the cheque in this situation, and the answer is that they did. Whether they charge me for doing it remains to be seen.

PMDUK makes a fair point but this is not a perfect world
