Hi,
My Dell Dimension 2400 desktop DVD Drive stoppped working first in 2006 (mind the PC was bought in 2004).I contacted the Dell customer service. As I was not insured , they advised me to buy the DVD drive from their online shop and it cost me around 60 pounds. They helped me fix the DVD drive in my pc on the phone (0870 number).I do not know whether paying 60 pounds for a DVD drive was a simple ignorance!!!

That newly fitted DVD drive has stoppped working again.

I can see average DVD drive could be purchased with 15-20 pounds.

Could I use any dvd drive (like samsung/hp, not Dell)) in my Dell PC?

My DVD/CD-RW Drive is not fitted with DVD Writer.Could I use any DVD Re Writer drive in my PC?

I am currently using a Liteon external DVD writer. But it is not helping me play all CDs/DVDs.

Many thanks in advance.

yes you can use any internal EIDE DVD writer, they were around £20-25 last time I looked.

Are you sure it is not a software issue?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks Albetross for your info. From my previous experience it seems a hardware issue. But I may be wrong. If I could tell you what is happening-
"When I insert any dvd/cd in dvd drive, first there is green flash in the drive button..a sound like sh..sh..sh..sh.Then it does not open the cd/dvd.If I double click in dvd drive via my computer, it fails to open it.Moreover, I can not see the logo of dvd/cd in my dvd drive although the dvd/cd is already inserted."

Seems software/hardware problem? I have recently downloaded dvd flab platinum in my pc.

    Thanks in advance again.

    Hi dps,
What has happened to the info you gave me? I can not see this anymore.Has it been edited by the system administrator or removed?

I talked to the customer service today and they checked the system via remote assistance. They are saying that the problem is not hardware, it is software and I might need to reboot the system. To look into this software problem, they would charge me 35 pounds!!! I can not afford it with this pc.

Is there any online help that might tell me how to solve my software problem disturbing the CD/DVD drive?

    Anybody could help me?

    Thanks in advance.

    Do CD's work?

Are you putting films in bought in a shop?

Did this start suddenly after you installed something? e.g. dvdflab platinum

A lot of tech support people say it's software and to reinstall windows because they can be bothered/don't know the answer/have a clock ticking, so don't take the techie at Dells word as gospel, it may be software, it may not, without any specific evidence, I can't say.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
