Is this a new Ebay scam?

Or has it been going on for ages and this is the first time I've seen one?

Here's where the scam ends up (WARNING: The site will steal your Ebay account login if you let it, as it has a fake login page):

http://https.cgi.itmebay.itemlists.co.uk/prwlist.php?item=20130219000831

So how do you end up there? The scammers list stupidly cheap Audi TTs, VW camper vans, etc, on Ebay, but the listing contains a redirect URL to switch you to an identical-looking page on the above fake site.

There's no point in putting a link to the original listing here, as they get shut down every couple of hours - but they simply come back a few hours later with a whole new set of scam listings on another stolen user account pointing to the same fake site...

If this particular scam is still running you will probably find one of their listings by searching for "VOLKSWAGEN 1999 AUTOSLEEPER TRIDENT 2.4 DIESEL" and looking at the ridiculously cheap ones. Don't forget - you will end up outside Ebay, so don't sign in there or your account will be powned.

It's convincing enough that when I reported it to Ebay, two of their reps did not even notice that they had been redirected!

  • There was someone on the ebay boards that had lost a lot from one of these but I hadn't seen how convincing the scam is, I thought they had clicked a dodgy link in the listing and hadn't realised the page redirects automatically. It would be really easy to not notice, though think the scam I read abot they get you to pay by bank transfer which would set alarm bells off.

Doesnt suprise me, Ive tried reporting something to them before and they are not the brightest bulbs in the box.

Remember when you could stay logged in 24/7. It kept logging me out and they blamed me, my computer, my connection, everything except themselves.
About a month later it rolled out that it wouldnt keep you logged in forever anymore.

I like the way the page takes you back to your ebay when you click that link at the top.

Shame its still got the valentines advert.

This one does the same (payment by bank transfer is what comes up on the fake site if you "buy" it), and would immediately make me suspicious, but there must be plenty of people that don't use Ebay enough to see that as odd...
