Barclays returned direct debit

Hi
My bike insurance went on the 21st last month. I thought since it went in January on the 21st it would go on the same date this month. It didn't, and they tried to take it today resulting in the direct debit being kicked back. I had planned it specifically so that the money would be available on the 21st. This has happened once before with a phone contract and I didn't get a charge for that happening (I'm with Barclays.)
My question is if they are going to charge you, when will you know about it? Is there anything you can do about it? Having lost my job I'm not currently working so I could seriously do without a disproportionate bank charge.
Any help would be greatly received.

The Direct Debit Guarantee states that they must notify you of the date on which they will take payments at least 14 days in advance, and of any alterations also at least 14 days in advance.
You may find the original paperwork says something like "On or soon after the 19th of each month" or whatever, in which case they are doing what they said they would and not altering anything.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

January 19th 2013 was a Saturday so d/d went out next business day ie 21st.
February 19th is a Tuesday d/d is asked for..
If you can prove what you posted then complain - if not accept your mistake and move on.0 -
Barclays charge £8 for a failed DD I recall, so hardly disproportionate.0

Hi,
Did Barclay's add this to your credit file? I have just had a DD returned for a credit card, stupid thing was I pad the pull amount owing a week before but they tried to take the full amount again via DD.
Not worried about the fee, more worried about getting something sill like this added to my credit file.0 -

Coincidentally, I've recently set up DD to pay my Barclaycard statement.
Their confirmation letter contained this:Impact of additional payments on your monthly direct debit
As with all Direct Debit Payments, we request your automatic payment 3 working days before it leaves your account. Any additional payments you make in this period will have no effect on the amount we have already requested from your Bank, but they will show as a credit on your next bill.
Although that doesn't specifically say they won't take a DD if you make an additional payment, it suggests they won't if it's made more than 3 working days before it's due.
However, what with the Easter holiday, perhaps you hit that 3 working day period they mention.0 -

Same reason as First Direct have the gall to pay 0% interest on credit balances: their bank account is a poor quality product.0
