brother multi func printer - help pls

brother mfc 590 - displaying call brother error 41,

called brother, basically said print head trouble, not worth investigating, throw the whole printer away , as labour £45 per hour & print head replacement £45-60

any suggestions please - got a degree in engineering, quite handy with a screw driver, any tests?, I realise if its a pcb failed , it realy is for the bin, but surely its worth a check... but i dont know what to look for ...any ideas please

we've checked the fax is transmitting perfectly, it just wont print from pc, or even try to photo copy

Is this any help? http://global.solutions.brother.com/Library/en_us/faq/faq000726_000/index.html. I've also heard that with that error no. the print heads might be worn out. I recently bought a half price Brother printer which was £30 cheaper than buying a replacement toner!

I've just decided to replace the whole unit, rather fed up !!

I have had to have an engineer out twice to replace the print head on a Brother all in one. (under warranty).

If you do a quick google search there are many forum of unhappy Brother customers with 'Error 41'.

There is talk of a recall and extended warranty for some products for this error.

It may be worth causing a fuss. I'm still trying to find out if the new print head has a years warranty!

May have to stick to HP in future.

A quick word of caution!

The engineer came round today and said he had another 4 or 5 with the same problem to fix today alone.

He also said that if you ring up don't tell them your using another brand of ink of they will fob you off saying its poor quality ink that has caused the error and it is not covered by your warranty.
