Any ideas what I can use?
The gaps in a concrete reinforcement mesh are too big.
Need a cheaper option than buying a made to measure from a pond safety firm.
Not sure whether to keep pond so just need to make it safe in the meantime.

Ask on freegle or freecycle for an old single bed frame, the type with. Angle iron sides and diamond mesh support. Rope up the springs and use that as a temporary measure. Depends on the size of pond though. You could always drain it and fill with sacks of gravel (still in the bag)0

There's stuff called "weld mesh" or "welded mesh" that might be more appropriate in terms of the grid size. It probably wouldn't be strong enough to support a child walking across it unless it was very well fixed at the sides. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

Personally I think the concrete reinforcement mesh would be good enough. It'll certainly prevent children of all sizes from falling in the water and drowning. That's all you realy need to achieve isn't it?
If you get a mesh that's fine enough to walk on, they will walk on it and they will probably end up jumping up and down on it too...0 -
No mesh would be better than cheap thing that fall in with kideo and make it hardest for them to get out. What ever you use it needs to be good and strong. Better to fence off imo0

A TWIL wire mesh fencing panel.0

When it comes to children and water you cannot be too safe and to be honest, money saving should not be the issue. A pool cover will invariably be left off at some point.
I agree with Mankysteve, put a wire fence around it. Make the fence high enough so you can just about step over it - you wont then need a gate and so avoid the problem of it being left open.0
