what does "without prejudice" on a letter mean?

Hallo - title says it all really. I was claiming £1998 in charges from First Direct and have been offered £1698. the top of the letter says "without Prejudice". what does this mean as I am considering whether to continue my claim for the full amount or to take the money and run.

do i have to sign the declaration they sent with it?

    I simple terms, you use "without prejudice" if you are making an offer to settle a dispute that you don’t want used against you in court as an admission of guilt, or as evidence of what you are prepared to pay as compensation if the other side refuses your offer.
    The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

    or in even more simple terms... "without prejudice" means it can't be submitted to the judge in a defence... unless the judge specifically asks for it.
    Hamsters have no tact and diplomacy, nor do they want any.
