LED spotlights for kitchen - how many?

Options
Hi

We are knocking our kitchen and dining room into one. I would like to have KSR LED dimmable spotlights. Is there a rule as to how many you should have per space and where they should go? I'm really struggling to work it out. I don't want to go crazy and have too many, but at the same time I don't want there to not be enough.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you in advance.

Its very difficult as you dont give an indication of the size of the room or how much of the divider you are knocking down/keeping up between the kitchen and dining room.

Last year we had a rewire in our house that has a small kitchen off the dining area...the dining area we put 2 rows of 4 spotlights in and in the kitchen area a row of 3 ....for us that was fine and brighened the areas well...we also had 5 undercupboard lighing strps but in around the units in the kitchen as an extra

a lot will also depend on how much natural light enters the area you want to light up...but we found that talking to our electrician was very usefil as he was initially able to recommend how many lights we might need.

  • Normally on a 1m by 1m grid, with adjustments to suit the size of the room. Also depends on the output of the lights - the above would be for 50w equivalent spots.

We have a 15" x 12" kitchen and have fitted 8 evenly spaced downlighters in the ceiling. They have LED GU9 bulbs in and they were about £8 each. We chose a daylight rather than yellow/cream light and there is plenty of light.
  • Hi - thank you for all your comments so far - they are really useful.
I only have the kitchen area measurements on me at the moment they are
    3615 mm (11ft 10 21/64in) x 3400mm (11ft 1 55/64in)
It has been recommended by our electrician that we have 12 lights in this space they are KSRFRD200 10w light fittings - equivalent to a 50w low voltage halogen lamp.
Does this sound about right? It sounds like a lot to me. But I don't know anything about the LED lights and how much light they actually give out.
  • The latest technology COB LED lamps are even more efficient and better looking. In GU10 format a 5W COB lamp is equivalent to a standard 50W halogen but I'm not sure how different the low voltage lights are.

For that size room I would expect 9-12 downlighters, with some undercabinet lights as well if you can. Whether 9 or 12 will depend on whether 3 or 4 rows of lights fits better. Personally I would have thought 9 downlighters would be sufficient, but depends on the kitchen layout. Even spacing should be targeted between downlights in both directions.
