Baofeng UV-5R radios (28-35 on amazon) are good for PMR use, equipped with RH771 aerials (3.75 ea) are also a good pair.

They need a mains charge though.

Don't these require a license though
Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j
  • Why avoid those that take AAA batteries? We use some in our work and they are pretty good, we simply take the batteries out when they are not in use. That sort of generalisation is a bit pointless.

AFAIK no, they can be programmed with PMR and free to use frequencies.

PMR frequencies maybe but they still won't be legal PMR radios - power too high and they have a detachable antenna.

I had some for campsite use but I think they only ever got used once. Mobile phones seem to be magnetically attached to people in some way, whereas the radios were always left behind or flat when they came to be used. Also it was pointed out to me, if they're taking a mobile phone anyway, what's the point in having an additional device to carry? I admit I can see the logic and also the radios tend to be bulkier and 'embarrassing' so mobiles won out.

These would be illegal to use for PMR446 and also licensed PMR unless they have been approved by UK Radio Authority for PMR use.

The only way these can be used legally is by licensed Radio Amateurs in the frequencies allocated to them. Any other use could result in a hefty fine of up to £5000 and/or up to 2 years imprisonment if discovered.
