Getting the first sale - Google adwords

Options
Hi all. This is my first post so please be patient!

I have started a new online ecommerce business. The site went live this week and I started a Google adwords campaign too, albeit on a modest budget of £5 per day.

I have done quite a bit of DIY SEO on the site (registering to directories and posting in other relevant forums with my web address in my signature - but not here of course) and trying use approrpiate keywords on my site.

I appreciate this all takes time to filter through but can't understand why Alexa.com can't find any inward links to my site yet.

I'm not even absolutely sure if Google has indexed my site. When I put in the serch term for 'olive oil club' my site does appear on the first page of the natural listings on Google (hurrah!) but when I have used other search terms in my keywords I don't appear. Can anyone tell me why?

I've heard Google can take anything up to 6 months to index my site, although other people say it may only take days. What is a reasonable time frame?

Regarding my Google adwords campaign I'm a bit disappointed as so far it has cost me £3 or so, over 2.5 days (not the £5 per day) and although my clickthrough rate is OK at around 2%, given that I've only had 17 clicks it is going to take forever to get anything like the traffic I'll need. Is this normal?
Any advice much appreciated. In anticipation!

Adwords wont give you many sales for £5 per day lol, try £50 or more and then you mean business. 17 Clicks is hardly a busy site.

Google uses a pagerank for natural listings.

    Type in google:

    site:http://www.yoursite.com

and then see if anything comes up.

To see if anyones linking to you type:

    link:http://www.yoursite.com
    Kind Regards

Thanks for that Bill. I can see that Google has indexed four of my pages, though I need to do some work on the keywords I now see. Still nothing for the links though.

£50 per day on adwords (£1500) or so per month is pretty high! I thought an adwords campaign in a niche area like mine would be much cheaper than that. I appreciate that if it brings in the business then it is money well spent but I can see my money going into a big black hole unless I properly test how adwords works for me.

How much do you all spend on adwords?

    Thanks again

Have you done a Google sitemap and a link to it in the robots.txt file? This is now the standard routine that Google, Yahoo, Ask and MSN use. Info here

This should ensure that your site is properly spidered.

One company I worked for for seo work was spening £2000 a day, really all depends on the market.
    Kind Regards
