Gas - being charged ex tennant debt

Wondering how common this is to people?

Just discovered British Gas are charging us gas & electricity arrears for ex tennant and despite evidence of tennancy agreement etc REUSING point blank to sort it or refund us.

Very long story i wont bore you with but ongoing over 3months now and getting nowhere.

Ofgem now involved but wondering if this is common as im hearing more & more stories - and WHAT THE HELL DO I DO ABOUT IT??

This is seriously impacting on my health now as we are being held to aboslute ransom ad they now are forcibly installing a pre paid meter with a warrant FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESNT LIVE HERE!

HELP - PLEASE!!

    Op why are they refussing the tennancy, how long you been there.... Also ofgem dont take up individule cases
    Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    If you are able to show a new tenancy agreement and proof that you never lived there before then you will not be charged for a previous tenant. Of course that also means that the previous tenant does not still live at the property.

    Did you give a reading when you took over the property?

  • No reading was given when we moved in because there already WAS a gas pre payment meter installed! We were advised on 5 seperate occassions that this was installed 3 weeks before we moved into the property! Despite sending in the tenancy agreement to prove this, B Gas suddenly have 'no record' of these dates and claim the meter was focibly installed by a warrant 2 years AFTER we moved in!!!!

    They also still have the old accounts running alongisde ours for the previous tennant and today told us that they will be transferring HIS electricity debt ont OUR BILL!

    Despite the fact his meter number on his bill DOES NOT match the one in our property they are still adamant this is happening!

    We are being held to ransom as BGAS have the debt charged to our gas meter which takes money of our top ups automatically and suddenly all records of the original date of the meter being installed are 'untraceable' and 'mistakes were made' which is utter bull!

    Now we are getting this electricity debt lumped onto our account (which is not a meter however they are trying to forcibly install a meter at our property now for HIS debt!)

    NOTHING gets this resolved - even the complaints team are involved in this and still stick to the basic 'tough its now your problem'

    Consumer Focus who seem to be like a citizens advice just for OFGEM have taken on this case!

    Everytime we phone we get different amounts/dates etc and half the time they tell us we do not even have an account with them at all - ridiculous!
