USA Customs Charges?

            Hi Custardy and Martindow,
The $125 included the postage $40 so it was a total of £76.
Got the letter - import duty = £0
vat = £15.40
AND clearance fee = £13.50
a total of £28.90!!! Don't mind the VAT but whatever the justification, taking £13.50 fee for a purchase that cost me £76.00 (including postage) is a bit too much, I think:-(
well you had the option to do your own clearance, but you didnt arrange it
you left it to the receiving courier to clear it
dont pay it and it will be returned to sender
its a bit late to think of these things once and item has been sent0 -
I suppose so! I had no idea I had to / could do clearance. Certainly the seller didn't tell me. Anyway all this is due to ignorance - I was buying this for my father - have never bought anything like this from abroad. So I kinda ordered it like I buy DVDs from Amazon!0

            Hi guys,
I'm thinking about ordering from LeisurePro (diving equipment) and my order is about $200 plus $68 for shipping. I read somewhere that if the products cost less than 135 pounds there is no duty to pay, and that 20% tax is only charged on the items only and not shipping (which is reasonable). It's supposed to be shipped by UPS Worldwide.. and I would have guessed that any handling fees should be included in the $68 (it's not exactly cheap!).
After what I've read though I'm not sure what to expect..and still haven't pressed the confirm button!
Please help out if you know any better!0 -

For items posted duty, VAT, etc is payable over 18 pounds (combined value of declared value and carriage cost). There is a higher limit if you bring things into the country in person - possibly this is the 135.Hi guys,

Calculate what the charges will be to see if it is still worthwhile going ahead. If it does come through with no charges that is a bonus but don't bank on it!0 -
VAT is applied but not custom duty according to this
" Customs duty is payable on imported goods with a value over £135 although payment is waived if the amount of duty is less than £9. This is usually charged as a percentage of the value "

wel add your VAT rate then you need the couriers fee's
for most its a set fee but some like DHL charge a %
then check the HMRC site to see what customs duty is due on clothing0
