Why is my area so bad that I can't rehome your cat?

I've been looking for a friend for my boy and just wanted a rant. I've passed the Cats Protection home test, they contacted me about a cat who needed a new home because her owners were moving into a flat that they coudn't take the cat into. I phoned up to ask to see it and the owner said that because I lived in the main city and not their town they didn't want me to take it :( Apparently their town is much quieter, even though she has no idea about where I live (quiet, one way circle, large back garden to play in). I know I'm a good owner, I just feel like they wanted to have their cat in the same area so they can see it whenever (I would keep them updated if they asked, I do for my last cat's owner), even though they're too selfish to move to a place where they can keep her.

  • her loss not yours....caring homes such as yours are not ten a penny and she may be nursing delusions about being able to pick and choose as to where her cat is re-homed. She may have to eat her words at some point, but if I were you I would keep on looking around, the right cat is out there waiting for you.

Thanks, it just felt a bit like a slap in the face really, if I was in that position, I'd rather that my pet went to a good home where they'd be looked after well. I'll keep checking the rehoming centres, hopefully the right cat is waiting for a home.
  • Don't know how big their town is (ours is population 2000), but if you rehome a cat too near its original home there is more chance of the cat trying to return to its old address.

Stupid people, hope that their cat doesn't suffer because of it.

The CP told me that it was an indoor cat with access to outside, but it was something that I was concerned with as well. It's not a large town, and if the cat wanders far just now it could easily try and find its way back.
  • I may be wrong but I was under the impression that some rehoming places will refuse to rehome a cat in the same area for the exact reason that moggymutt mentions. The cat will get confused and will try to return to its original home if it has some familiarity in the area. I think the owners are being selfish really, if they can no longer keep the cat it would better to give it a fresh start and cut ties, otherwise it could be confusing for the poor cat.

Just an update with this. I contacted the lady at CP just to give her an update that things had fallen through, and she said that she had found out about what happened and that she hadn't been aware about the owners wishes to rehome the cat in the same town. It looks like they have to respect the owner's wishes, because the cat is still at the owner's house though. So it seems that they will rehome in the same area in certain circumstances.
