Insurance - Named driver question

Options
Hi There

I am just looking at insuring my first car, I am 32 so a late starter!! as part of the quotation I am looking at putting my fiancee (30) on there as well as it brings down the quote and at some point she will be driving the car.

My fiancee should hopefully have passed in the next few months. Now I have a few questions on this

1 - I can see price differences between putting her on as a named provisional/named full driver. If i put her on as provisional would there be a fee to change that to full in a few months time or should i just put her down as full from the onset to avoid any admin fees. With this option she would not drive the car until she passes.

2 - We are going to get married in June, this would probably coincide around the same sort of time as updating her status from prov to full. Again what would be the best way to handle insurance here. Would it be best to put her down as my wife now and pay the 12 months or wait until she passes and we are married to change over the insurance and pay any fees?

Not sure if anyone has an experience of this?

Cheers

No the best thing is to tell the truth.

She hasn't got a full license and isn't your wife. If anything happens before those two situations happen you could find the insurance comapny make it very difficult for you. they could certainly knock back any claim you might make for your own vehicle (if you are fully comprehensive).

Why not have a chat with a broker once you have a price from the web that covers all situations? They might be able to set up somethign with an unserwriter that means there won't be a double whammy admin fee.

The overriding thing to do is tell the truth!

So to have her on now the answers are:- provisional and partner living with me (if she is).

You then tell the insurance company of any "material facts" such as licence changes or marital status.

Any other option leaves you open to not having claims paid.

yeah, that does make sense and to be honest was the way i was going to do it. Just wanted to make sure there wasnt a better way of doing it considering the change in circumstances.

Seiously, have a chat with someone over the phone or call into an office if there is a broker in town. They might well be able to arrange something that works.

The online stuff is great if you have something straightfforward but if it isn't then they can be pretty poor.

Good luck and congrats on the upcoming wedding.

    cheers!!

Will have a chat with some of the best options from my price comparisons. TBH I am quite limited with who I can go with as a new driver without costing me a fortune!!

Just gotta decided what car I want to get now :j

Co-op do nice black box policies for young drivers. Might be able to give you some options on being a new driver too.

Remember, not all companies quote via comparison sites and just because it says "insurer declined to quote" doesn't mean they won't insure you. Often, it just means they won't deal with the meerkats :)

I was on my husband's car insurance policy as a provisional driver, when I passed my test he called to inform them. They then charged us another £60-odd for the premium as they said that I was a bigger risk because I would now be driving alone as opposed to always being accompanied as a learner. They didn't charge an admin fee though!

When you find your best quotes, ask about fees for amendments.

A provisional licence holder is probably going to push the premium up a lot. Were you planning to add your fianc!e before he/she passed their test?
It might be cheaper to leave him/her off and get a separate policy with, eg. provisional marmalade.

The cheapest insurer for a cohabiting driver with a full licence is not necessarily cheapest for a married driver with an inexperienced spouse as a named driver, so there is nothing wrong with using some made up details to see what the quotes would be with different circumstances and different insurers, to give you an idea of whether an insurer will even cover the change in circumstances you already know is on the way.

For example many insurers won't insure inexperienced drivers, even if they would insure a learner. A learner must always have an experienced driver in the car and so do limited mileage, but a newly-passed driver has no such limitations. It's worth finding this out before you buy the policy rather than find you have to cancel mid-policy because they won't cover your partner.
