Advice regarding unsolicited contact from capquest.

Hello,

Capquest have been contacting my girlfriend's phone number regarding an account under my name.

Text message says -

Name - (my name)
Account Number - ************

Contact us immediately on this number - 0845 yadda yadda

I was wondering it anyone had any advice on what to do as of yet, I was thinking send them an e-mail requesting to know exactly what the debt was and why they are not contacting me directly?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

How did they get hold of your gf number? If you didn't give it to them there would be a Data Protection issue as well.
Maybe there is an account that is in your name but she opened it and gave her mobile number as a contact number? This may narrow down the list.

Do you owe anyone money that you have not paid back?

Is your name a fairly common one?

Have they also been ringing the number?

Could simply be a phishing trick. Or some mates playing a joke.

Be careful. No company can tell you or anyone of your acquaintance anything about a debt under Data Protection without security questions being answered. I would not be doing that by e-mail nor a telephone number I had not checked and double checked is legitimate.

Just because they say they are a debt collector does not mean they are, just because an account is in your name doesn't mean it is yours unless your name is highly unusual. Even then could be identity fraud. Check the three credit reference agencies to see if any outstanding debts are lodged against you there or ring Capquest using numbers on their website.

What is the actual 0845 number? If you search it on http://www.saynoto0870.com/ what comes up?

SayNo lists NO 0845 numbers for Capquest. And there is no 0845 number listed on Capquest's website either.
