Impact of open fill valve on bills - advice appreciated!

Hello,

We're hoping for some advice from forumites before a meeting with our landlord on Friday - we think their error has cost us in fuel bills.

We moved in on 1st March last year. We have had problems since then getting and keeping the flat and the water hot. We have also had three radiators burst in the course of the year. The last one burst last week and, when the plumber came on Friday, he checked the boiler (we cannot access it) and said the system fill valve had been left completely open meaning hot water has been constantly running out of the overflow pipe as well as being pushed through the system. He thinks this has been the cause of the burst radiators and he also suggested there will have been a cost implication.

Is he right? We pay a monthly standing order to our supplier - over £90 for a 2 bed flat - and have had to send two top up payments as well. I considered changing supplier but a check on comparison site using our meter readings suggested we are on the best deal!

Thank you in advance!

How much water had been leaking out?
    If it's a cup a day - it's largely irrelevant.
A hundred litres a day of hot water leaked will cost about 5kWh/day.
    Or 25pish.
Only when the heating is actually on though.
When it's not on, it's 'just' costing you in water bills if any.
  • Thanks, that's reassuring.
