Combining home contents and buildings insurance

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could advise me how best to combine my home contents insurance and buildings insurance?

I used to rent so just had contents insurance which expires in March, but have recently bought a house so now have buildings insurance which expires in November.

Is it generally cheaper to combine both on one policy? And if so, is it possible to get a contents policy for 8 months in order to bring it in line with the buildings insurance?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give.

Why not contact your current provider and ask if they can add the contents to the buildings insurance?
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.
  • Some will find it cheaper to have a combined policy and some will find it more expensive. The best cashback tends to be the preserve of combined policies though. By harmonising your renewal dates however it will at least make it easier to compare the two options in the future.

There are no 8 month policies, there are some that are monthly renewable with an annual review that therefore have no real cancellation penalty but these were traditionally for sub prime space and so dont tend to be the best quality.

Due to less negative selection issues compared to motor there are more insurers offering low/ no cancellation fees for Home insurance but the other option may be as suggested above, to find an insurer that will allow you to buy one half and add the other for the remainder of the term when the next renewal comes up. Not all insurers will be able to do it however as to some "combined" home is actually two distinct policies on their system

It's useful to have a combined policy if you have a claim which is part of both. So, someone breaks into your house causing damage to a door, this comes under buildings. The same person then steals your TV, this comes under contents. Separate policies mean two claim for what could be considered one event.

Worth checking the policy as the cheaper companies would charge the excess twice eg once for buildings and once for contents. The better policies will charge the excess just once

I agree, try to combine the two, then there are no grey areas over who will pay for such things as laminate flooring, fitted wardrobes etc. In the event of a loss you will only have one loss adjuster.

One policy covering both makes it a lot less "bitty".
