shake and vac usually pretty good

  • Or bicarbonate of soda - sprinkle over, leave for a while and then hover up. It absorbs the smell. Shake and Vac is good although I find some of the scents a bit overwhelming!
How about hiring a carpet cleaner? Lots of supermarkets, dry cleaners have Rug Dr or similar machines. You fill it with water and the appropriate detergent, it sprays out the soapy water and then vaccuums it up. Drying time is about 6 hours (windows open).
They're about £25 for 24 hours hire (last time I used one).

  • If the rugs have been used as a toilet by dogs, I would be chucking them out.

  • Replace the rugs and use tips above for carpet if you can't afford new carpet.
Any shake n vac type stuff however simply masks smels and won't get rid of the underlying problem which is by now well embedded within the carpet fibres forever
  • Shake n Vac works well for us x

It depends how bad it is - if the urine (I assume that's the problem) has soaked through to the underlay and been left uncleaned, then there is probably little to be done but throw them out....

If, on the other hand, it's a problem of a house-training puppy having the odd accident, plus general doggy odour, then I have found that soaking up the worst of any accident with kitchen roll, then using a carpet cleaner with a solution of biological washing powder in, followed by a good sprinkling of bicarbonate of soda, left on for a couple of hours then vacuumed up gets carpets nice and fresh, and discourages any repeat performances.

Don't use any ammonia-based cleaning product on urine stains, as it will make it worse.

Can you tell I've had a puppy and two toilet-training toddlers in the last three years?! :rotfl:

If the urine is in the underlay or floorboards you won't ever get the smell out you will just spend a small fortune on cleaning and deodorising products, chuck the carpets or rugs. Even cleaning companies admit this, for example

"In many cases our normal cleaning process is all that is needed to correct minor pet problems.

The powerful rinsing action of our cleaning system can effectively remove urine from carpet fibre. The problem with pet odour is that it can be much deeper than it first appears at first. Pet urine can easily soak through the backing of the carpet into the padding underneath. In more severe cases the urine can penetrate into the wooden floor beneath the padding. This creates a problem that is multi-layered.

The urine also provides for the growth of bacteria. This in turn contributes to a worsening of the odour problem and can contribute to permanent colour loss of the carpet fibre.

    Treatment

To eliminate this problem the urine must be removed or neutralized from each of the layers affected. If the contamination is limited to only the carpet fibres, then the hot water extraction method may be all that's needed to remove the odour. In more severe cases a urine neutralizer may be applied.

In the most severe cases, replacement of the carpet underlay, treatment of the under-side of the carpet and the floor below may be required, even replacement of the carpet in some cases.

Left untreated over a period of time pet odour can become absorbed into many of the porous materials in your home. Curtains, upholstery, Plasterboard, even concrete foundations can absorb odours

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I thought it was only me thinking that way.

It is a fact of life that dogs will shorten the life of any carpet, for several reasons.

What the OP didn't say was if the dogs where theirs or a previous owners?, they'd be gone if I'd "inherited" them.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • It is better to take help from professional cleaners to get rid of any kind of bad smell or stains from the carpet. They offer great cleaning services, making your house fresh and clean.
